The Mazda’s OEM oil cooler burst a gasket and the BMW is running lean and making serpentine belt noises.
Ol’ reliable, I guess.

Maybe it’s not bad luck he has, but contrarian luck? Like, things that should be reliable aren’t and thing s that shouldn’t be reliable are.

Then once he has an all-Fiat garage, he can change his user name.

Easy solution:
-Remove the oil cooler from the mazda and reroute some hoses
-Pull the MAF sensor on the BMW so it runs pig rich
-Ride the bike

It be like that sometimes. Here’s my fleet, from worst off to best:
1. Rabbit. No engine in it. Still needs almost everything.
2. Golf. Yeah, the green one, the “daily”. Something gave up on the clutch. I think the recei ver plate. Rear brakes were also dead. And there was an exhaust leak, and the engine started leaking oil, moderate electrical issues were starting up, and pistons were slapping like crazy, likely a mix of wrist pins and skirt slap. Coolant leak was starting too. Not worth the time or effort to repair for now, so it’ll sit.
3. Jetta. Exhaust is screwed up, no brakes. Low miles, but it runs at least? I need to get it together and one the road.
4. Audi. Runs and drives, but a leaky tire, fried valve stem seals, light body damage and one cracked tail light and headlight are keeping me from driving it. It wasn’t much fun to drive. After the Jetta is sorted, it’s getting sold.
5. Golf... the other one. I hate this car. I’m aiming to have it liquidated by Sunday at the latest.
6. Cabriolet. The daily. No major issues, except being old and kinda shitty. It hit 260k this morning! I do not desire to drive this in the winter. Worst idea I’ve ever heard.
7. Moped.... It’s a moped. That either makes it the worst vehicle or the best.
So yeah. It’s not a huge deal to have all your dailies busted. Just know that first of all, it’s your own damn fault for driving ancient shitboxes, but also it’s totally fine because you can probably fix them and you do have other means of transit, so there’s no real issue.

The Italian is just the simplest and I’ve already replaced everything on it.

Oil cooler is integrated into the oil filter adapter, lol. It’s a water->oil sandwich thing. Pretty gross.

Time to fire up that 280z 2+2 in the weeds.

I’ll sit in the engine bay making vroom vroom noises

80 wheel hp tops, sputters for a minute when I start it, lots of odd belt noises and suspension clunks, top leaks a bit, heater controls don’t work, brakes are somewhat sketchy, but hey, it has yet to leave me stranded anywhere.

These cars are hilariously simple to work on and get running. The saying on an old datsun is “ I don’t care about the mechanicals as long as the body is good.”

Does the BMW have the N54, I think that is the one with the serpentine belt eating issue where it gets caught under the timing cover and causes severe issues.

He had a Chevy-powered Jag that was also awful
![]() 10/07/2020 at 10:30 |

Nah, M54B30. N54 was E9x cars. These just will have tensioners fail randomly once they start making noise and by the time you realize that your water pump isn’t spinning you already need a new engine.

This car has no powertrain and the body is not good.

I think I would have stuck with the broken LS400 doorhandle as far as problems go

A 2+2 shell is barely worth it’s weight in iron oxide.

Easy solution :
-
Drain the
oil
- Enjoy the car without any oil leaks while it last

Yea, he bought what would normally be the more reliable Jag.
![]() 10/07/2020 at 10:40 |

Nah. The E46 is a car I actually want to work on. The LS400 was a miserable pile of boredom that vacuumed up effort and returned nothing.

That’s why it was free and will be getting absolutely hacked to bits for an ill-advised safari build. Eventually. Maybe. Whenever the V8 for it gets here.

Yeah someone used this goofy MDF-type garbage for the outer layer on that fascia and it just disintegrates. I was thinking of doing corrugated metal.

Yeah went to a guy in Arkansas to be his first car. They brought out a freaking compression tester and all kinds of stuff. Spent 2 hours going over it with a fine toothed comb.

For once I’m happy I’m not swimming in a sea of projects. Everything works from the bus to the W8, which means “what to drive to work today?” is a multiple choice question!
I’ve read what it takes to repair Miata oil coolers...oh man I do not envy that process. At least the Duc is as beautiful as always!

Miata’s at a shop. Fuck it. I gave an attempt but without a lift and a second set of hands it wasn’t happening. Hurt my back trying.
